Back in June, Trey was getting a snack out of the pantry and found a can of peanuts. He asked for them, so I gave him one to try. He liked it and ate it then asked for another and immediately spit them out. He usually spits out foods that he doesn't like, so I thought he just realized that he didn't like it.
Well, within a couple minutes he threw up and had a rash so we knew something was up. Thankfully we had some benadryl and gave it to him and all was good.
It was scary but we knew he probably had an allergy so we made an appointment with an allergist who was referred by our pediatrician.
Trey was so brave at Dr. Anmuth's office and sat like a big boy for his exam.
Dr. Anmuth first started with testing for peanuts only and said if Trey was positive for peanuts then we would also test tree nuts as it is common for kiddos to have both.
He didn't cry at all for the first round of tests but just kept telling Jim "hot" and getting him to blow on his back.
Peanut was obviously positive so next we tested for tree nuts, which thankfully were all negative.
We were prescribed an epi pen and we immediately got started reading all labels and preparing for this new stage in our lives. My cousins Katherine and Betsy were extremely helpful during this time so thank y'all SO much.
I ended up getting Trey these bag tags for his backpack with our contact information and I also got him an epi-pen case with our contact information listed on it as well.
Thankfully his school is nut-free, so I do not worry too much about him being at school. We have learned that birthday parties will be hard as we will have to make sure we have him his own treat to eat so he doesn't feel left out.
It hasn't been too difficult for us as most of the foods Trey already ate were peanut free. We do avoid any products that "may contain" or that were made on shared equipment with peanuts, so grocery shopping takes a little longer than it has in the past.
Also, we are not able to find any safe yogurt covered raisins for him, so if y'all know of any please let me know!
These Lofthouse cookies are some of my favorites, so I am so glad to know they are safe for Trey.
I think holidays will be difficult with all the baked goods, but we are slowly making our way through this new world of allergies!
