My Mama's friend, Mrs. G, owns an adorable antique store in downtown New Roads. Mama had been coveting a particular old and beautiful chicken box in this store for quite some time. Mrs G gave it to my Mama who subsequently gave it to me. It was love at first sight and I immediately knew what
The chicken box was old and worn (but clean nonetheless!) It had a beautiful patina and had the bottom removed which created the perfect canvas for our next project.
I have always loved wine racks over refrigerators. Something about using that essentially non-usable space in such a great way always appealed to me. I remember the first time I saw an "above the fridge wine rack" that I absolutely loved. It was at my cousin Katherine and her family's house and I was hooked on the idea of one day having one of my own.
So, back to the chicken box... The Hubster and I somehow fit the sucker into the trunk of my car (you would be AMAZED if you knew the things I have fit into that car!) and brought it home. When we unpacked it, I immediately measured it and to my delight it was a perfect fit between the cabinet and wall above our fridge!
Now came the tough part and the Hubster got to work! He first mapped out the box on graphic paper and decided where the squares would go. He wired up the box in a "zig-zag" fashion on both the front and back of the box. After getting the box wired, we realized the wires were able to move and would not be sturdy enough on their own to hold heavy wine bottles. Hubster (being the crafty man that he is) decided he would take a smaller gauge wire and wrap each wire junction to make it more stable. This worked like a charm and the result was a one-of-a-kind chicken box wine rack. I'm sure we will enjoy this rack for years to come!
Close-up detail, so beautiful!
Also, feel free to bring us some wine to fill it up with when you come to visit! ;) Just kidding!

It is great!! I love the old wood n the tight knots Jim made where the wires cross. You two are so clever. Love, PeePee
I love the way the wire looks. How creative to not just use wood. Great job guys!
